Facebook’s “Conspiracy”

April 12, 2011

So like most of the people who read blogs, you probably have a facebook account.

And you’ve probably received 1, or dozens of messages talking about Facebook’s new NewsFeed policy, and how it’s “awful” that only the people that you interact with on a regular basis show up on your page.

Really?

This is a cause of concern and uproar?

Let me break it down for you, in the only way I know. Bluntly.

Facebook is a tool. It is there for you to USE. Like a tool. A hammer won’t pound that nail unless you actually use it.

It is not there to automate your social life. It is not there to make sure every one of your “friends” knows what you are doing every moment of every day.

It is there for you to keep up with the people you socialize with on a regular basis, whether it be family, friends or co-workers.

You miss not seing status updates about the random person you haven’t talked to in 5 years? That’s unfortunate. But you have options.

The first is sending out a typical message to everyone on your friend list complaining about something that you disagree with. Newsflash BTW, Facebook is free, so until you start paying for it, Option one seems idiotic to me.

The Second option..get off your proverbial lazy virtual ass, an reach out to those people you feel facebook is hiding from you. Yes! Get “up” and do something about it. Send those mysterious “friends” messages, interact with them, and lo and behold, guess what’s gonna happen? You guessed it! They’ll start to trickle into your newsfeed. And then, finally, you’ll have that satisfaction of feeling popular again.

Until then, please, please, stop complaining about anything Facebook does (that doesn’t involve violating privacy of course). Please stop congesting my inbox with your 1st world problem. Please be pro-active in a manner that actually helps you accomplish your goal. Please reach out and actually talk to someone, instead of hoping they poke you.

As mentioned in one of the earlier posts, we are not only losing the ability to interact on a human level, but now we expect computers to do all the work for us as well. Wake Up! I’m mad as hell and I’m gonna tell you via status updates!
